In Home Care Coordination Helps Keep Dementia Seniors at Home

Aug 15, 2012   //   Comment

senior independence with dementiaA new study performed by researchers at John Hopkins University discovered that an in-home care coordination program for dementia patients improved their quality of care, quality of life, and ability to remain comfortably living at home.  Coordinating care between a team of caregivers proves to be the best solution for the senior, as well as the entire care team.

Study author Quincy Miles Samus, Ph.D., of John Hopkins comments, “We are hopeful this study will help guide how community-based dementia care can be effectively and efficiently delivered in the future.”  ClearCare’s innovative home care system and home care software program are available to make in-home care coordination even easier for dementia patients and their caregivers.

The 18-month John Hopkins study found:

  • 70 percent of seniors who received in-home care coordination were still living at home at the end of the study.
  • 50 percent of the control group who only received an initial consultation and standard care remained at home.
  • Seniors who received in-home care coordination reported fewer unmet needs and higher quality of life than those in the control group.

Previous research studies have proven that Alzheimer’s patients and those with dementia disorders are at an increased risk for disability, mental health conditions, and placement in a nursing home.  In addition, their caregivers are more likely to suffer from medical and mental health problems.  In-home care coordination programs aim to improve the quality of life for both dementia patients and their caregivers.

How Home Care Software Can Help

Evidence shows that education about dementia disorders – as well as proper management of the disease – is critical to quality care.  Agencies that use ClearCare’s home care software and home care system are able to match qualified caregivers with dementia patients.  Using a reliable home care system eliminates the risk of complications that come from uncertainty or ambiguity regarding dementia care.

Researchers at John Hopkins noted how using in-home care coordination resulted in better outcomes for dementia patients.  When teams implement standardized care and use a web-based application, such as ClearCare’s home care system, to monitor care, the needs of the patient were met in an efficient manner.  ClearCare’s home care software also facilitates better time-management, communication and problem-solving.

Each of the remarkable features of ClearCare’s home care system and home care software benefit dementia patients and their families in numerous ways.  To hear more, contact a friendly ClearCare representative for a free demonstration.
